Ah, muscle soreness—the bittersweet reminder that you actually worked out yesterday. It’s that next-day stiffness that can make climbing stairs feel like conquering Everest or turning a door handle a test of will. 

For anyone who's hit the gym hard, tried a new workout, or just pushed their body a little further than usual, muscle soreness is like an unwelcome but familiar guest. So, of course, you’re going to want to get the most out of your workout and just keep working out even through the soreness.

But here’s the million-dollar question: should you work out when you're dealing with muscle soreness, or is it better to give your body a break? So, here’s exactly what you need to know!

Why Does Muscle Soreness Happen?

Muscle soreness, also known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, is your body's way of saying, "Hey, we did something different yesterday, and I’m feeling it!" It’s essentially the result of tiny micro-tears in your muscle fibers that occur when you challenge your muscles in new or intense ways.

As your body repairs these micro-tears, the muscles become stronger—cue the soreness. It usually kicks in 12 to 24 hours after exercise and can last up to 72 hours, depending on the intensity of your workout and your body’s response. If you’re stacking more weights into your regimen, you’ll feel it, and if you are trying a new workout in general, you’ll also feel it.

Are You Making A Healthy Lifestyle Too Complex To Follow?

There are all kinds of methodologies out there for getting and staying healthy. Of course, these can depend entirely on what your goals are in life. If you wish to lose weight, there are a million diets and approaches, many conveniently designed to sell you a course. If you want to build muscle there are many excellent plans for doing so, but also the implication that a personal trainer is likely the best course of option (that’s not always true).

Because “the conversation” around health needs to perpetuate itself and is part of our market, it can seem as though staying constantly “on the journey” and always having a new approach to follow is really the goal of all this talk, and nothing else.

If you’re not careful, you might find that you’ve twenty subscriptions on the go, ten diets, four workout plans, eighteen supplements, and five different routines gunning for your attention, the only constant in all this being your sense of frustration and lack of progress. Sometimes, you just need to simplify everything to make it calmer and more comfortable. Thinking clearly is a huge element of recovering into a healthy lifestyle.

So, how do you go about simplifying it all? Let’s consider that, below:

Focus On The Three Pillars

Sleep, diet, exercise. In that order. If you can fix those well, then you’ll be surprised just how much healthier you feel. Sleeping just means getting as close to eight hours a night as you can, uninterrupted, without caffeine still in your system, or constantly waking up with poor sleep hygiene. Diet means eating at maintenance or a little below it with as many vegetables as you can fit into that, and eating nutrient-rich foods. Exercise can be as simple as walking or getting up from your desk and stretching multiple times a day. This is so simple, but if you can sustain those bedrocks, you may be amazed at your progress.

Identify One Major Area Of Change

We tend to think that fixing health is holistic and so we should try to fix every single bad habit we have at once. But does that really work? Not always. In fact, taking on too much can lead to burnout or that sense of too much complexity to manage. What if you focused on quitting smoking for good, and then used that as a step to move forward into running, instead of trying to do both at once? It doesn’t matter if you use cold turkey, patches and a healthcare program, or smoking cessation hypnosis, because you’ll be able to focus your entire energy into it for good.

Journal Your Activities

One of the reasons a complex health schedule can be so dizzying is that you have to recall everything together at once. You have other things to think about on top of that, and so going by the seat of your pants is a little much to ask. That’s why it’s good to journal your activities to the extent you can. A note-taking app, dietary calorie counter app scanner, exercise journal or even just an old notebook is fine. You can then get your thoughts out, and focus (with renewed energy) on the reality of change.

Getting fit is a worthwhile goal, and the only way to reach your goals is with an exercise routine. As you stay active and work out, your physical and mental health will improve. You’ll also be able to shape your body, which can be great for your appearance and self esteem.

But sometimes it’s hard to know what you’re doing when you’re exercising. You might feel as though you’re wasting your time, especially if you don’t see any results. Here are a few ways to make sure you’re getting the most out of your exercise.

Setting Goals

The first step is to actually set goals. Think about why you want to work out. If you want to just get healthier and be more fit, you will exercise differently than if you want to lose weight or build muscle.

Once you know what you want to achieve, think about the steps to get there. This will help you stay motivated. Set smaller, achievable goals. You might want to develop the strength and endurance to lift a certain weight, or you might want to be able to run a certain distance.

Once you’ve achieved those goals, up the ante.

Creating a Routine

As well as exercising, you need to think about what you’re taking into your body. Your body needs protein to build muscle, as well as calories for energy and other nutrients to be healthy. Even fat has a part to play.

Your goals will come into play when thinking about what to eat. If you’re trying to lose weight, you need to lower your calorie intake. If you’re trying to gain muscle, you will need to increase the amount of protein you eat. 

You also need to think about how much you drink. You need to be well hydrated to be healthy and, if you’re working out a lot, you might sweat a lot and lose water that way. Electrolyte drinks can keep you hydrated and healthy. 

Rest and Recovery

Another thing to consider is how much rest you get. When you exercise, you’re actually damaging your muscles. It’s only when you rest and sleep that your muscles actually grow stronger and bigger. 

It stands to reason that resting is a vital part of reaching your goals. You can even overtrain and hurt yourself if you don’t rest when needed. Rest during sets and make sure you get plenty of rest after working out.

You can also recover more quickly by soothing your muscles. Ice baths can reduce soreness and inflammation. A massage after working out can also make your muscles less tense. By looking after your body and making sure you can recover between workouts, you will prevent injury and see better results.

Staying Motivated

Sometimes it can be easy to start working out, but hard to get motivated. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to jump to weights or exercises that are too difficult in an attempt to get better results. Then, when it’s too painful or difficult, they give up.

It’s a far better idea to work up to these levels. Spend your early days getting familiar with the movements of an exercise so you don’t injure yourself. Use lighter weights or even no weights until you know what you’re doing.

A more experienced person might be able to help you with this. A personal trainer or even a friend can guide you through movements. 

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to exercise with a buddy. You can encourage and push each other, and you’re more likely to stick to a routine if you don’t want to let someone down.

Always work towards the next goal. If you have something to work for, you will stay motivated until you reach it. Then, think about where you want to go next.

Recovering Your Fitness After Injury: Some Do's And Don'ts

Most people experience a serious injury at some point in their lives. And given the chaotic world we live in, it’s almost inevitable. 

But what makes injuries so awful isn’t the initial pain, but the weeks and months spent recovering from them. Some can last for years, making it challenging to recover your fitness. 

That’s where this post can help. We run through some of the do’s and don’ts for anyone wanting to bounce back from an injury and get back to exercising like before. 

Do Start Slow

When going back to the gym or your training routine, always start slow. Don’t push yourself to the limit to make up for lost time (no matter how tempting that might be). Asking too much of yourself can worsen existing injuries and increase damage to tissues, including tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments. 

Remember, when you first get back into exercise, your body won’t be ready for it. You might find you can only perform at 70% of your previous level, regardless of how hard you try. 

The good news is that with consistent effort, you can quickly regain lost strength and fitness. For most people, it doesn’t take long. 

Don’t Rush Into It

Related to this last point, avoid the temptation to rush back into training when you stop feeling pain. Always be careful to provide the injury with enough time to heal before putting it under critical stress. 

Do Listen To Your Body

When exercising, listen to your body and pay attention to what it says. Don’t ignore it. 

If you are going back to exercise after a long break, look out for signs like faintness or dizziness. These can be a sign that you need to take things slower. 

Also, listen to what the injury site is telling you. You should know the difference between good and bad muscular pain. 

Don’t Skip The Warmup
If you decide to exercise, always ensure you take the time to warm up. Don’t just rush back into until you’ve had a chance to assess your flexibility and see where you’re at.

Warmups might not be necessary every time you exercise. But they make much more sense if you are recovering from an injury and need time to get everything moving again. If you don’t, your muscles could seize up and that could make injuries worse when you start exercising again.

We’ve all been there. One minute, you’re cruising along, juggling work, social life, and maybe a hobby or two. Then, suddenly, everything feels overwhelming. The deadlines, the emails, the never-ending to-do lists—they start to pile up. Your work weeks are starting to feel a whole lot harder to manage. You feel like you’re running a marathon with no finish line in sight, and each step gets heavier and heavier.

Does any of this sound familiar? Well, welcome to the brink of burnout. It doesn’t matter if you’ve turned what was once your passion into a business or even landed your dream job; burnout is burnout, and it will come no matter how much you love something. It doesn’t mean you’re selfish, lazy, or anything negative at all.

Honestly, it’s just something that happens naturally. So, generally speaking, it’s not something to really worry about, and honestly, you’re not alone in this either. So, with all of that said, here’s what you can do to feel like yourself again when you’re right on the brink of burnout!

Start By Recognizing the Signs

So, before diving into solutions, it’s really important to identify the warning signs of burnout. These can creep up gradually, so they’re easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. Some of the common indicators include chronic fatigue, feeling tired even after a full night's sleep, and irritability, where you snap at coworkers or loved ones over minor issues.

You might notice decreased productivity, struggling to complete tasks that used to be a breeze, or physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or unexplained aches and pains. But on top of that, detachment is another red flag, making you feel disconnected from work or personal life. If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to take action.

It All Starts with Prioritizing Self-Care

This is something that’s super important to remember: self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and face masks (though those can be nice). Another obvious one is that you need regular exercise, as this gives you endorphins. Lastly (but far from least), you’re going to have to start incorporating relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or progressive muscle relaxation to calm your mind.

But of course, you still deserve to do other things in your day that make you happy (that are still relaxing), such as playing puzzles like Mahjong, cozy games like Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing, baking cute pastries you saw on TikTok, or cozying up and watching something like Gilmore Girls. But overall, it’s about taking care of yourself physically and mentally, and mental health usually goes down south when we stop taking care of ourselves.

Start Setting Those Boundaries

Needless to say, we’re actually living in a time that glorifies busyness, it’s easy to overextend yourself. It’s not a good look, seriously, it’s not. So, with that all said, learning to set boundaries is essential for preventing burnout- yes, you read that right! So, you’re going to have to begin by learning to say no. Yes, it’s uncomfortable but it’s so important!

This means you’ll need to politely decline additional tasks or social invitations when you’re already stretched thin. Stick to your designated work hours and avoid bringing work home with you. Turn off work-related notifications outside of these hours. But also, make sure to schedule time for activities that you enjoy and make you feel rejuvenated, and protect this time fiercely.

You don’t have to go through this alone. While burnout is normal, why isolate yourself? Ideally, reaching out for support can make a world of difference.
