5 Reasons You Should Try Martial Arts

June 20, 2025

When it comes to activities to do, martial arts has to be one of the best. The reason is that there are so many benefits to taking up a martial art, such as Jujitsu, Muay Thai, or Aikido. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Great physical workout

There is no doubt that martial arts are a fantastic full-body workout. You need to be fast to be able to land kicks and punches, so that means your body gets a good aerobic workout. You also need to be flexible to ensure you can reach the target place on your opponent's body, which means you'll work on muscle conditioning. Lastly, you need to have power behind your punches, which means some of your training tools will be dedicated to building muscle, too. Indeed, if you are looking for a workout that works every aspect of your physique, then martial arts is a great choice.

Great for self-defense

Another reason you should try martial arts is that it's a great confidence booster as it teaches self-defence. Indeed, you would be surprised to find out how many people do not know how to defend themselves if they were attacked. Of course, we all hope that it won’t happen, but there is a strength and confidence in being able to know that we could defend ourselves if the situation arose.

There is so much to explore in this space

There are so many different ways you can engage with martial arts. The first is trying different ones like Kendo, Judo, Karate, MMA, Kickboxing, or Kung Fu until you find the one that sings to you. There are also more sedate martial art forms like Tai Chi and Qi Gong that you may wish to try.

In addition to taking part in martial arts physically, you can spectate and support martial arts competitions and events in your local area. This can be an incredibly exciting watch, and the athletes benefit from the support.

You can even engage in things like this https://www.fantasymmadness.com, which is like fantasy football but for MMA, UFC, kickboxing and bare knuckle leagues. This allows you to experience all the excitement of picking your favourites and tracking whether they win or lose. With the added benefit that the only bruises you’ll need to worry about are the ones on your ego, if you don’t choose well!

Good for the mind as well as the body

One of the best things about martial arts is that they can be great for the mind as well as the body. Not only do they teach discipline and commitment in the face of physical hardship, but many also encourage participants to meditate as part of their practice.

Amazing community

Last of all, just like in many sports, there is a fantastic community that surrounds many martial arts forms. First of all, you’ll have the people in your club who are studying under the same Sensei to get to know. Then there are all the people online you can connect with who make martial arts content or discuss martial arts topics online.
